Holiday Work 1 - Understanding the Elderly Challenge

  • Explain in your own words, the FOUR key recommendations of the report.

1. Housing for Seniors: Have different housing options for the elderly: Instead of just old housing estates, let the elderly buy better houses like new flats, condominium or even studio apartments with some discounts.
2. Accessibility for Seniors: Make all public transport elderly-friendly: Have more seats for the elderly reserved near the exits of the transport and at bus-stops and stations.
3. Caring for Seniors: Top up Medi-save Accounts when Government shares budget surplus: Have the government to share a sum to the elderly since they will become weak and get sick often.
4. Opportunities for Seniors: Have more events and services for the elderly taking place: Have some events to cheer up the elderly or let them try something new and improving their lifestyle.
  • State ONE way that the CAI report is recommending to make our public housing more elderly-friendly
1.The Government should consider introducing guidelines for the provision of accessibility and safety features in the homes for seniors, through a review of the Code on Barrier-Free Accessibility, to create a more elder-friendly environment.
  • State TWO ways on how we can ensure that the quality of elderly care here in Singapore is affordable
1. Raise funds and people can use the money to pay part of the fees of good elderly care
2. Improve the quality of the health care in every health centre like clinics and hospitals so there would be cheaper places with good quality elderly care.
  • After reading the CAI report, what do you think are the THREE things that you can do, as an SST student, to help overcome these elderly challenges
1. We should tell the government to make the environment more elderly-friendly with:
Bigger steps in staircases and escalators
White colored words with a black background and a bigger front
More lifts and slopes which also fall in sight
More handrails
Have seats at every location

2. Do community service by going to elderly homes to help them with their house work

3. Do fund raising to hire a doctor so we can invite the elderly for a free health check-up
